The Spirit of the Lord

And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Isaiah‬ ‭11:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The Spirit of the Lord

Isaiah 11:2 is a prophecy about the coming of the Messiah, who would be endowed with the Spirit of the Lord. This Spirit would give him the wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and fear of the Lord.

Wisdom is the ability to discern and apply truth. Understanding is the ability to comprehend the meaning of things. Counsel is the ability to give wise advice. Might is the power to accomplish things. Knowledge is the accumulation of information and understanding. Fear of the Lord is a reverence for God and a desire to obey him.

The Messiah would need all of these qualities to fulfill his mission of saving the world. He would need wisdom to understand God's plan and to teach others about it. He would need understanding to empathize with people and to meet their needs. He would need counsel to guide others and to make wise decisions. He would need might to overcome Satan and his forces. He would need knowledge of all things, both human and divine. And he would need the fear of the Lord to remain faithful to God and to his mission.

The Spirit of the Lord also rested on Jesus of Nazareth at his baptism. This was a sign that Jesus was the Messiah, the one who had been promised by the prophets. Jesus demonstrated all of the qualities listed in Isaiah 11:2 throughout his ministry. He was a wise teacher, a compassionate healer, a wise counselor, a powerful miracle worker, and a man of deep faith in God.

The Spirit of the Lord is also available to us today. When we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us. The Holy Spirit gives us wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. These qualities enable us to live a life that is pleasing to God and to make a difference in the world.

How can we apply this passage to our lives?

Here are a few ways:

• Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and understanding. When we are faced with difficult decisions or challenges, we can ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. He will help us to discern God's will and to make wise choices.

• Seek counsel from wise people. We can learn a lot from the wisdom and experience of others. When we are facing a difficult situation, we should seek counsel from people who trust God and who have good judgment.

• Trust God to give you the strength you need. When we are feeling weak or overwhelmed, we can remember that the Holy Spirit gives us power. We can trust God to help us to overcome any challenge that we face.

• Make the time to study God's Word. The Bible is a treasure trove of wisdom and knowledge. When we study the Bible, we learn more about God and his plan for our lives.

• Develop a deep reverence for God. The fear of the Lord is not a fear of punishment, but rather a deep respect and awe for God. When we fear the Lord, we want to please him and to obey his commands.

As we live in the power of the Holy Spirit, we can demonstrate the same qualities as the Messiah: wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. May we use these gifts to bless others and to make the world a better place.

In summary:

• The Messiah will be endowed with the Spirit of the Lord.

• The Spirit of the Lord will give him wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord.

• These qualities will enable him to fulfill his mission of saving the world.

• The Holy Spirit is also available to us today.

• We can apply this passage to our lives by asking the Holy Spirit for guidance, seeking counsel from wise people, trusting God for strength, studying God's Word, and developing a deep reverence for God.
