The Power of Faith
Jesus replied, “Why do you say ‘if you can’? Anything is possible for someone who has faith!”
Mark 9:23 CEV
The essence and takeaways from this verse are:
- Jesus challenges the father of the demon-possessed boy to examine his own faith and trust in God's power. The father had said to Jesus, "If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us" (Mark 9:22). Jesus responds by repeating his words, "If you can?" and then declares that "Anything is possible for someone who has faith!"
- Jesus teaches that faith is the key to experiencing God's miracles and interventions.
Faith is not a mere wish or hope, but a confident assurance and conviction that God is able and willing to do what He has promised.
Faith is not based on our feelings or circumstances, but on God's character and word.
Faith is not passive or fatalistic, but active and obedient. Faith is not a condition for God's power, but a response to God's grace.
- Jesus invites us to grow in our faith and overcome our doubts and fears.
The father of the boy confessed his mixed feelings, saying, "I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24).
Jesus did not reject him for his weakness, but accepted his honest plea and healed his son.
Jesus also told his disciples that they could not cast out the demon because of their lack of faith, and that they needed to pray more (Mark 9:28-29).
Jesus wants us to trust Him more and more, and to depend on Him in every situation.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your words of life and power.
You said that anything is possible for someone who has faith.
I want to believe You, Lord, and trust You in every situation.
Help me to overcome my doubts and fears, and to rely on Your promises and Your presence.
You are the same yesterday, today, and forever, and nothing is too hard for You.
Increase my faith, Lord, and help me to see Your hand at work in my life.
In Your name I pray,
Amen. 🙏
