God is Good

You have done many good things for me, Lord, just as you promised. You are good and do only good...
Psalms‬ ‭119:65‬, 68 ‭NLT‬‬

Context

These verses come from Psalm 119, the longest psalm in the Bible, which is an extended meditation on the law of God. The psalm is divided into 22 sections, each of which begins with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Verses 65-68 are from the section that begins with the letter ט (tet).

Main Idea

The main idea of these verses is that God is good and does only good. The psalmist reflects on God's faithfulness and goodness, and expresses his gratitude for all that God has done for him. He also recognizes that God's goodness is not limited to his own personal experience, but that it extends to all of creation.

Key Points

• God is good (v. 68). This is a fundamental belief of the psalmist and of the entire Bible. God's goodness is not based on his actions alone, but also on his character. He is inherently good and always acts in accordance with his goodness.

• God does only good (v. 68). This means that everything God does is motivated by love and goodness. He never acts out of malice or spite. Even when he disciplines his people, it is for their good and ultimately to make them more like him.

• God's goodness is evident in his promises (v. 65). The psalmist has experienced God's goodness firsthand through the fulfillment of his promises. He knows that God can be trusted and that he will always keep his word.

Applications

• Trust in God's goodness. When we are facing difficult times, it can be easy to doubt God's goodness. But we must remember that his goodness is not based on our circumstances. He is still good, even when things are bad.

• Be thankful for God's goodness. We should take the time to reflect on all the good things that God has done for us. This will help us to grow in our appreciation and love for him.

• Do good to others. God is good, and he calls us to be like him. We can show God's goodness to others by loving them, serving them, and sharing the good news of the gospel with them.

Conclusion

Psalms 119:65-68 is a powerful reminder of God's goodness and faithfulness. May these verses encourage us to trust in God, be thankful for his goodness, and live our lives in a way that reflects his character.
