The Fear of the Lord the key to Wisdom

Respect and obey the LORD! This is the beginning of knowledge. Only a fool rejects wisdom and good advice.
Proverbs 1:7 CEV

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings that teach us how to live according to God's will and wisdom.

The first chapter introduces the main theme of the book: the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. To fear the LORD means to respect and obey him, to acknowledge his authority and power, and to worship him with reverence and awe.

The fear of the LORD is the foundation of true wisdom, because it leads us to follow his commands and instructions, which are for our own good and happiness.

However, not everyone fears the LORD or seeks his wisdom. The verse contrasts the wise with the fool, who rejects wisdom and good advice. The fool is someone who ignores or despises God's word, who trusts in his own understanding and opinions, and who does not care about the consequences of his actions.

The fool is arrogant and stubborn, and he does not listen to correction or instruction. The fool is foolish because he does not realize his need for God and his dependence on him. The fool is also wicked, because he rebels against God and his moral order, and he harms himself and others by his sinful choices.

Therefore, the verse warns us not to be like the fool, but to be like the wise, who fear the LORD and seek his wisdom. The verse also invites us to read and study the rest of the book of Proverbs, which contains many practical and valuable lessons on how to live wisely and godly in various aspects of life, such as family, work, money, friendship, speech, justice, and more. By applying the wisdom of Proverbs to our daily lives, we can grow in our knowledge and understanding of God and his ways, and we can enjoy his blessings and favor.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I praise you for your wisdom and your word. You are the source of all knowledge and understanding, and you have revealed yourself to us through your Son Jesus Christ and your Holy Spirit.

I confess that I need you and your wisdom in every area of my life. I want to fear you and obey you, and not be like the fool who rejects your wisdom and good advice.

Please teach me your ways and guide me in your truth. Help me to listen to your voice and to follow your commands. Grant me a humble and teachable spirit, and protect me from the snares of the enemy.

Thank you for your grace and your love, and for the promise of eternal life with you. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
